To establish the importance of production management

Principle

Importance of various tools and techniques used in production management

Theory

Objective:  The main objective of this assignment is to establish the importance of production management as the job of managing and controlling the actions required to generate a product. Production management can be basically summarized as planning, controlling and managing the industrial processes. There are five M’s that are needed in production management such as men, material, machines, methods and money. All these six M’s have their own unique roles in the production management for example men are the workforce of the production process, machines are needed to manufacture the product, materials are ingredients whereas methods are the processes. This assignment will cover the basic functions of production management. Several forecasting techniques are used in production management to reach the objectives such as brainstorming technique which is used to forecast demand for new products. Goal oriented forecast technique is used to identify the technological developments required to achieve a fixed goal and this technique is often used by large companies having research and development departments. Graphic charting technique is also a way of forecasting future technological developments by plotting past developments of technology on a logarithmic scale. Matrix technique which is used by only large companies is flexible and can be adjusted with the changing times. Nominal group technique does not allow interaction between the group members at an early stage and the interaction takes place only when the ideas are presented by every single member of the group. In Delphi technique, no interaction takes place between group members. Simple average technique is based on the average value for a given period of time. Facility location  in production management played an important role in production management as it determines the right location for the manufacturing facility providing sufficient access to customers, workers and transportation. As facility location is critical for business continuity and success of the organization so it is important to avoid mistakes while making selection for the location and for this some factors needed to be taken into consideration as customer proximity, business area, environment policy and etc. The main objective behind the planning of facility location is to design effective workflow in order to increase production capacity of the organization, promoting safety of plant as well as its workers and to reduce movement of workers, raw materials and etc. The organization can achieve the objectives of facility layout by ensuring better training of the workers and supervisors, creating awareness about health hazard and safety standards, ensuring optimum utilization of workforce and etc. Facility layout and materials handling is equally important in production management as it involves overall simplification of production process in terms of equipment utilization, minimization of delays, reducing manufacturing time, and better provisions for maintenance, minimization of waste and higher productivity and etc. The facility layout can be categorized into four types such as planning a completely new facility, expanding or relocating an existing facility, rearrangement of existing layout, minor modifications in present layout. The facilities layout problems can be classified according to the type of facility is under consideration such as manufacturing plants, commercial facilities which includes shops, offices, banks or etc, service facilities such as hospitals, post offices, residential facilities, cities, townships, recreational facilities and etc. An MBA course in production management is very much effective in giving deep insight into this matter.

Principle: To establish the importance of various tools and techniques used in production management to ensure higher production and getting optimum result from the workers.

Conclusion

Conclusion: It can be concluded that by using the above written tools and techniques of production management, higher and quality production can be achieved. The tools are quite effective in not only setting the practical goals but also are very much effective in achieving the goals. Many companies which were running into losses were taken into consideration and one by one the techniques of production management were applied to them. It was further noticed that these measures were really effective in adopting new techniques and ensuring optimum production. The tools are quite able to solve many issues such as issues related with design of a process, infrastructure needed to support the process, increased co-production of goods and services, mass customization, optimizing global supplies, production and distribution network. Now, it could be concluded that the companies could perform well if they have the efficient planning, lean production techniques, and techniques of supplier development, capacity management techniques and etc. However, the company needs to make some changes in the material and information processing along with customer processing and in the process technology related to volume and variety. By adopting the changes and doing little modifications in the processes, it is clear that the company can lead to a very bright future and can expanded it wings to the abroad also.
